February 2011

They're baaaaack!                zombie

Like zombies, these bills just won't stay dead.

Pennsylvania design community:

We just heard the previous sponsor will be re-introducing the Interior Designer's licensing bill for this session.

It does not have a bill number yet but the sponsor will be looking for co-sponsors for his bill next week.

NOW is the time to be organizing a strong grassroots opposition.

If you are an IDPC member or sponsor, you will be kept up-to-date on all activities and/or movement of this bill, pertinent information including bill analysis, talking points, legislator contact information, sample letters, hearing dates, and all other updates crucial for defeating this bill.

 YOUR ATTENDANCE IS CRITICAL!

 June 7th Town Hall Meeting

RSVP pmorrow@IDPCinfo.org  by Friday, June 4!

As you know, the House Professional Licensure Committee will be holding a hearing on June 24th on a design licensing bill to limit your right to work and earn a living .  The proponents of the bill have a lobbyist and have been filling legislators heads with misinformation and allegedly filling their pockets with thousands of dollars -- including the Chairman of the Professional Licensing Committee.

Fortunately, there's one thing more important to legislators than money:  VOTES.

This fall will be a tough election year for incumbents.  We need to show them that the overwhelming majority of the design community are opposed to this practice and we need to effectively communicate WHY.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

On Monday, June 7th, the Interior Design Protection Council  and the NKBA will be presenting a joint program to educate the design community at large about the proposed practice act.

We will:

  • Tell you WHY HB 1521 would restrict your ability to practice and/or put you out of business
  • Tell you HOW it would negatively impact the entire design community
  • Give you WHAT you need to stop it
  • Tell you WHEN to act and WHO to contact

WHERE?:

4 Points Sheraton
800 East Park Drive
Harrisburg, PA 17111
717-561-2800

Monday, June 7th

5:30 p.m. light refreshments
6:00 - 7:00  p.m. program

We cannot overemphasize how important it is for you to attend this extremely important meeting.  We have been fighting the same bill since 2007 and our goal is to STOP it from coming back again.

We have purposely kept the program short and at convenient time so that the entire design community will have an opportunity to attend and learn about the proposed law which would for the first time in Pennsylvania, license designers and dictate where you may work and what services you may provide.

NOW is the time to become involved in opposing this restrictive and anti-competitive bill which, if passed, will surely impact your business and ability to work.  At the very least, you owe it to yourself to learn first hand about the bill and determine how it would affect you and your livelihood.

 In this difficult economy,
the state government should enact NO new laws
which would make it more burdensome for its citizens
to earn a living.

Your voice is important!

Too busy?  If this bill passes, you may not be in the future.

Please take just one hour out of your busy day to attend this meeting.  Your future ability to work could depend on it.

Email your RSVP by June 3 to pmorrow@IDPCinfo.org to reserve your place!

PA Hearing Rescheduled
Details to follow

Organization leaders --

I just wanted to give you a heads up that the PA hearing on HB 1521 has been rescheduled.  Here is the information we received from the Committee:

The House Professional Licensure Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on HB 1521, which establishes the State Board of Interior Designers, on Thursday, June 24th at 9:00 a.m. in Room G-50 Irvis Office Building in Harrisburg, PA.  The subject of the hearing will be HB 1521 in its current form

We have just confirmed that unlike the hearing which was postponed earlier this year in which HB 1521 had been gutted and replaced with language that would amend the architect's law, we are now back to a full blown practice act.

September 2009

Pennsylvania design community,

IT'S FOR YOU TO PROTECT YOUR OWN PRACTICE!

The Interior Design Legislation Coalition of Pennsylvania (IDLCPA) is once again planning a Lobby Day at the state capitol in Harrisburg on October 5th to try and re-ignite interest in their restrictive, anti-competitive practice act.

But guess what?  SO ARE WE!

IDPC, in conjunction with Liberty for PA Designers and the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and other allied organizations will also be at the capitol on October 5th for:

DESIGNING FREEDOM LOBBY DAY

Click here for flyer with time and details.

It is extremely important that your legislators see that the design community does not want or need to be regulated.  And we cannot do it without YOU!

  • Help us stop IDLCPA from hijacking the interior design profession.
  • Help us stop the destruction of our profession -- your profession.
  • Help us ensure that the design community maintains their First Amendment right to free commercial speech and Constitutional right to occupational freedom.

Liberty for PA Designers Action Alert-March 2009

We have been warned by a pa. House representative’s office that calls are now coming in in favor of a new interior design licensing bill. We have now read this bill, and while it has not yet been introduced, idlcpa (asid + iida) has already starting its campaign.

Please go to our website, www.libertyforpadesigners.org and click on the legislative page. Phone numbers for all of the members of the professional licensure committee are there.

Please call as many members as possible to say that you are opposed to interior design licensing and that it will cost jobs. That it is totally unnecessary and that consumers are already protected by existing legislation, and that no one is losing work because of the ibc (international building code).

Call your own legislator and say the same thing.

To reach your legislator, go to  www.house.state.pa.us, look right and type in your county, press “go”, then scroll down for your town, and click on the representative, and you’ll get their phone number and address.

When the economy turns around, it will be nice to know that we still have the right to practice and earn our living.

The practice you’ll save by this effort is your own.
